Panthers Ready for Battle with Bobcats

FIU hosts Texas State on Saturday.

MIAMI (September 9, 2021) -The FIU football team welcomes Texas State to FIU Stadium on Saturday, September 11. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. ET.

The contest can be streamed on ESPN+ where "Voice of the Panthers" AJ Ricketts will have the call with Patrick Murray. Corey Brooks can be heard on the Panthers' new radio home, 105.5 FM and the iHeartRadio app.

SCOUTING THE BOBCATS
Texas State fell to Baylor 29-20 during the team's season opener. Jahmyl Jeter led TXST with 45 yards rushing and scored a touchdown on eight carries. Calvin Hill ran for 31 yards on nine carries. Brady McBride threw for 156 yards and a touchdown while completing 20 of his 40 passes.

Defensively, Troy Lefeged, Jr. recorded 10 tackles for the Bobcats, while Zion Childress had seven stops and forced a fumble.

Jake Spavital is in his third season with the Bobcats. The head coach is 5-20 at the helm for Texas State.

LAST TIME OUT
FIU dominated Long Island, topping the Sharks 48-10 during the squad's first game of the season. Running back D'vonte Price carried the Panthers offensively with a career-high three rushing touchdowns, to go along with 165 rushing yards on only five carries. Through the air, quarterback Max Bortenschlager passed for a career-high 266 yards and completed an efficient 14-of-17 attempts, to go along with two touchdowns. Wide receiver Bryce Singleton hauled in a career-best 149 receiving yards on six catches.

OPENING THE SEASON STRONG
The new look FIU offense came out of the gates firing on all cylinders by scoring 21 first-quarter points in the season opener against Long Island. The 21 points are the tied for the second most points scored in program history during the first quarter and the most in the Butch Davis era.

In total, FIU scored 48 points against Long Island which is the most in a season opener in program history.

Not only did FIU set all kinds of records in the season opener against, Long Island but it was also the first Panther victory in the a season opener since beating UCF, 15-14, in 2015 and it was the first opening season home victory since FIU downed the Mean Green of North Texas by a score of 41-16.

As impressive as the Panther offense was in the first half of the season opener, the FIU flexed just as much in the second half. The Panther defense allowed only 54 yards in the second half against Long Island with only two of those yards coming in the fourth quarter.
