Swim & Dive Defeats FAU; Three Divers Qualify for NCAA Dive Zones

Panthers grounded the Owls in last dual meet of the season

BOCA RATON, Florida (Jan. 28, 2022) - The FIU swim and dive team capped off its dual meet slate with a big victory over a Conference USA rival on Friday, as the Panthers downed the FAU Owls by a score of 196-104 in Boca Raton, Florida.

FIU improved to 6-1 in dual meet competitions this season, while the Owls fell to 3-2.

The Panthers won 12 of 16 events against the Owls, including a sweep of the relays and both diving events.

The diving trio of Kaitlyn Fredericks, Raquel Mason, and Alexa Lemus Hernandez highlighted the day for FIU by each qualifying for NCAA Diving Zones in the 1-meter.

Fredericks posted a score of 300.90 in the 1-meter, while Mason recorded a mark of 280.58, and Lemus Hernandez scored 273.15.

Mandy Song placed first overall in the 1-meter (358.58) and second overall in the 3-meter (299.18), while Maha Gouda won the 3-meter (352.05) and finished second overall in the 1-meter (340.50).

On the swimming side, FIU swept the top two spots in the 200 medley relay and the 200 freestyle relay.

The group of Michaela Trnkova, Sara Gyertyanffy, Julia Miranda, and Elinah Phillip won the 200 medley with a mark of 1:41.90. In the 200 freestyle, Kelsie Campbell, Jessica Shpilko, Phillip, and Gyertyanffy swam a collective time of 1:35.22 to take first place.

In addition to helping win both relays, Gyertyanffy won two individual events on the day by taking the 100 breaststroke (1:03.03) and the 100 freestyle (51.48).

Kasia Kolodziej took first overall in the 100 butterfly while recording her fastest time (56.20) ever in the event during a dual meet competition.

Delaine Goll secured first-place in the 200 breast with a time of 2:19.97, marking a season-best for Goll in dual meet competitions. Goll also finished second in the 100 breast with a time of 1:05.02.

Stephanie Hussey seized both the 200 butterfly (2:03.85) and the 400 IM (4:28.01).

Julia Miranda secured a first-place finish in the 100 backstroke with a mark of 56.24.

Phillip and Helga Fodor finished first and second in the 50 freestyle with marks of 24.14 and 24.55, respectively.

FIU also saw second-place finishes from Mia Zahab in the 400 IM (4:29.09), Ellie Maradyn in the 200 breast (2:25.30), Christie Chue in both the 100 freestyle (52.94) and the 200 freestyle (1:53.58), Helvina Huet in the 1000 freestyle (10:41.08), and Miranda in the 200 backstroke (2:03.92).

The Panther divers are set to make an appearance on Saturday, Feb. 5, when FIU hosts the South Florida Diving Invite at the Coral Springs Aquatic Center. The Blue & Gold swimmers will appear next on Friday, Feb. 11, for a tuneup at the Miami First Chance Invitational.
