ATLANTA, Ga. - Sophomore
Yasmine Kabbaj highlighted the FIU women's tennis team on the first day of main draw action at the ITA Southeast Regionals in Atlanta, Ga., as Kabbaj advances into Saturday's Round of 16 after notching a pair of wins in the main singles draw on Friday.
104th-ranked Kabbaj, a native of Morocco, opened with a pair of wins as the main draw's No. 10 seed to feature in tomorrow's Round of 16, dropping Georgia State's Andreea Stanescu, 6-3, 6-1, prior to prevailing in three sets over Georgia Tech's Rosie Garcia Gross, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5, to finish flawless on the day.
The sophomore will face Miami's No. 19 Alexa Noel and main draw's No. 2 seed in Saturday's Round of 16.

Kamila Umarova and
Ekaterina Khayrutdinova each collected a pair of wins in the Round of 64, though, both fell in the second round to be eliminated from the main singles draw. Umarova edged Kennesaw State's Ji Lee, 7-6 (3), 2-6, 6-1, prior to slipping to Georgia's Mai Nirundorn, 3-6, 1-6. Khayrutdinova downed Florida State's Kristyna Lavickova in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1, before falling to Florida's Carly Briggs, 3-6, 4-6.
Umarova and Khayrutdinova also paired up in doubles, narrowly falling in a tiebreaker to Florida State's Bisset and Lavickova, 7-8 (1), to slip into Saturday's consolation doubles draw. The duo will face FGCU's Emma Bardet and Ida Ferding.
UP NEXT
Saturday's (Oct. 15) schedule will feature two rounds of doubles beginning at 9 a.m., followed by singles round of 16 approximately at 2 p.m. Consolation will continue throughout the day.
