ATLANTA, Ga. – FIU's doubles tandem of
Kamila Umarova and
Ekaterina Khayrutdinova will feature in Sunday's consolation doubles finals at the ITA Southeast Regionals in Atlanta, Ga., after bouncing back strong in doubles action with a pair of wins on Saturday.
The duo mark the remaining Panthers competing in Atlanta, as No. 104
Yasmine Kabbaj came up short in a hard-fought matchup to Miami's No. 19 Alexa Noel, 5-7, 5-7, in the Singles Round of 16 on Saturday to be eliminated from main draw.
Umarova and Khayrutdinova prevailed through back-to-back tiebreakers in both matches, as the tandem edged FGCU's Emma Bardet and Ida Ferding, 8-7 (2). The Panthers then rallied down the stretch to overcome Stetson's Alanna di Francesco and Anais Gabriel, 8-7 (5).
Umarova and Khayrutdinova were then slated to face Florida State's Vic Allen and Mila Saric in Sunday morning's semifinals, though, a walkover due to injury allowed the Panthers to advance into Sunday's consolation finals.
The duo will matchup against the winners of Stetson's Noa Cohen / Nadejda Maslova and UCF's Jaleesa Leslie / Anique Kattenberg.
