CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Graduate goalkeeper
Maaike van Klink anchored the FIU women's soccer team in goal with a career-best performance at Charlotte on Sunday afternoon, tallying a season-high 10 saves, including a critical second-half penalty kick save, to hold the 49ers to a scoreless 0-0 draw at Transamerica Field.
The Panthers move to 2-7-4 and 0-4-4 in the Conference USA, while Charlotte moves to 3-9-4 and 2-5-2 in the league.
Van Klink, a native of Voorshoten, Netherlands, recorded 10 saves on 18 shots faced, as the 49ers amassed an 18-6 shot advantage for the match in keeping a persistent attack.
Her 10 saves marked the most a Panther has tallied in goal since
Ithaisa Vinoly did so against FAU on Sept. 19, 2021, while also matching the second-most saves recorded in a game by a C-USA goalkeeper this season.
Senior
Sydney Amparo led the Panthers with two shots, including one on target, followed by shots on goal from
Kim Schneider,
Izelle Barriere,
Idelys Vazquez and
Farah El Tayar.
Charlotte opened on the attack right out the gates, as the 49ers overwhelmed FIU with an 11-2 shot differential for the first half – seeing van Klink corral six saves to send both squads into the locker rooms scoreless at the intermission.
The Panthers nearly found a pair of chances in the 29
th and 35
th minute, as Amparo found a slither of separation to flick a shot just wide-right, followed by an
Izelle Barriere bicycle kick that was met by Charlotte's Brenna Murray en route to the 0-0 halftime score.
Out of the break, van Klink continued her heroics, as the Panthers responded with a several shots on goal from
Kim Schneider, Vazquez and Amparo, though, coming up short to Charlotte's keeper through the 65
th.
A collision inside the box in the 73
rd from van Klink resulted in a penalty kick for the 49ers, though, van Klink managed to provide the stop with a crucial diving save bottom-left to keep the margin scoreless.
Farah El Tayar logged a late shot on goal that was saved in the 82
nd, followed by a final save from van Klink on a Charlotte shot in the 83
rd that would ultimately seal both team's chances at a go-ahead goal and result in the 0-0 draw by the end of regulation.
