Panthers Slip in Midweek Tilt at FAU, 2-0

FIU concludes the regular season Saturday at home versus Middle Tennesee

BOCA RATON, Fla. -  The FIU women's soccer team came up short to FAU in Wednesday night's Conference USA matchup, 2-0, at FAU Soccer Stadium in Boca Raton.

The Owls concluded the regular season 9-7-3 and 5-2-3 in the C-USA, while the Panthers drop to 2-8-4 and 0-5-4 ahead of this weekend's regular season finale at FIU Soccer Stadium.

FAU held a 15-4 shot advantage for the match, including nabbing eight corner kicks through the match, while notching both goals in a three-minute span midway through the second half.

Noemi Paquin, Chinatsu Kaio and Sydney Amparo all recorded shots on goal, in addition to a shot from Hanako Fujii to round out FIU's attack on the night.

Maaike van Klink finished with five saves in goal for the Panthers despite the loss.

The first half was played tightly with just three total shots on goal between the two teams, as FIU's lone shot of the first half came from Kaio in the 14th minute to be met by FAU's Lexi Gonzalez. The Panthers successfully defended three corners in the first half to keep the Owls at bay, while Van Klink managed to hold steady with two saves through the opening frame to see both teams head into halftime scoreless.

The Owls upped their intensity in the second frame, though, seeing both teams trade shots through the opening minutes, including a van Klink save and on-target shot from Noemi Paquin through the 58th. FAU struck first in the 61st minute on a shot that beat van Klink low-right prior to quickly doubling the advantage just two minutes later in the 63rd off a corner-kick header to extend a 2-0 advantage.

Senior Sydney Amparo answered shortly after with a high-left shot on goal, though, Gonzalez was there again for the save. The Panthers couldn't corral any rhythm down the stretch to make a break for the goal for the duration of the match, as FAU eventually went on to hold on for the 2-0 victory by the end of regulation.
