FIU Volleyball Earns First C-USA Road Win of the Season Over UTSA

Four Different Panthers Finished with Double Digit Digs

San Antonio, Tx. -  The FIU women's volleyball team (6-16, 3-6 C-USA) picked up its first Conference USA road victory of the season winning 3-1 (25-20, 25-17, 19-25, 25-20) over the University of Texas at San Antonio on Sunday afternoon at the Convocation Center.

The Panthers took the lead in the match winning the opening set 25-20. FIU never trailed in this set and their biggest lead was 5 points when the score was 13-8. The Roadrunners would tie up the set at 20-20, but the Panthers' offense erupted to take control of the set. They closed out UTSA on 5-0 scoring run to secure a 1-0 lead in the match.
 
FIU's defense stepped up in the second set and held the Roadrunners to just 17 points. It didn't start that way however, as UTSA was out to a 5-2 lead early on. The Panthers responded with a 4-0 run to take a 6-5 lead and slowly created separation from the Roadrunners midway through. FIU's lead grew to 21-14 and UTSA was unable to regroup from the large deficit. The Panthers would go on to take the set 25-17 and a 2-0 match lead.
 
In the third set, UTSA stormed out to an 8-3 lead early on which led to FIU calling a timeout. The Panthers responded with an impressive 7-0 scoring run to take a 10-8 lead. It did not last very long however, as the Roadrunners regained the lead with a 5-0 run. Now leading 13-10, UTSA took full control of the set, and the Roadrunners avoided a sweep by winning the third set 25-19.
 
FIU closed out the match winning the fourth set 25-20. It was the closest set of the match as there was eleven different ties throughout the set. It started off with both teams trading points and neither could establish a large lead. The largest lead either team had was three points. With the set tied at 19-19, the Panthers went on a 6-1 scoring run to win the set and match.
 
Outside hitter, Jade Sadeiko, led the Panthers with 14 kills. She was also second on the team with 18 digs. Katie Turner led FIU in that category with 25. Defensively, it was a solid match for the Panthers as four different players finished with double digit digs. Madisen Miller and Paige Thibault each had 12. Athina Dimitriadis was second on FIU with 12 kills and she led the team with six blocks. Setter Sarah Nading paced the Panthers with 41 assists.

UP NEXT
After their win today, FIU will wrap up their three-game road trip this Friday, Oct. 28 to play against Florida Atlantic University at 7:00 p.m. The Panthers return home to Miami in their following match against the University of North Florida at 5:00 p.m. This match will be streamed on CUSA.tv
