FIU Volleyball Wraps Up Weekend with a Loss Against UNF

Alyssa Wissinger led the Panthers with 15 kills

Miami, Fla. -  The FIU women's volleyball team (7-17, 4-6 C-USA) dropped their Sunday afternoon matchup in four sets in a non-conference matchup against the University of North Florida (25-17, 23-25, 22-25, 11-25).

The Panthers were off to a great start in this match winning the first set 25-17. Outside hitter, Emily Meyer, was not in the starting lineup for FIU but she immediately made an impact as their first substitution of the match. Off the bench, Meyer had four kills to lead the Panthers to a 1-0 match lead.

The Ospreys tied up the match by winning the second set 25-23. It was a close set throughout the first half and FIU had a three-point lead numerous times. UNF was able to tie up the set each time and never let the Panthers create a big lead.

When the score was tied 16-16, UNF went on a 3-0 scoring run which tilted the set in their favor. The Ospreys held off a comeback by FIU when they were leading 23-19. The Panthers were able to tie it up 23-23 but UNF closed out the set scoring the last two points.

UNF took the lead in the match winning the third set 25-22. This set played out like the previous one as both teams were trading points majority of the time. FIU was able to take a 22-19 lead late in the third set which led UNF to call a timeout. After the timeout, the Ospreys went on a 6-0 scoring to take the lead and win the set.

The Ospreys won the match in the fourth set, and it was the largest deficit of the afternoon for the Panthers. It was a slow start for FIU as they were trailing early on 5-1. It was difficult for the Panthers to chip away at UNF's lead and it reached double digits when it was 18-8. The Ospreys closed out the match on an 8-3 run to win the fourth set 25-11.

Two Panthers finished the match with double digit kills: Alyssa Wissinger (15) and Athina Dimitriadis (11). Sarah Nading led both teams with 41 assists and she was second for the Panthers with 10 digs. Libero, Katie Turner, led FIU with 12 digs and outside hitter, Jade Sadeiko, was third on the team with eight kills.
