Women’s Soccer Falls on Late Goal to Western Kentucky, 1-0

Panthers fall on late WKU goal in the 71st minute

MIAMI – The FIU women's soccer team dropped a tightly contested contest by a 1-0 margin on its home pitch against Western Kentucky on Friday night.

Following over 70 minutes of scoreless play, the Hilltoppers finally broke through with the match's lone goal when Kenlee Newcom put away a loose ball in the penalty box at the 70:42 mark following a corner attempt.

The Panthers, who outshot Western Kentucky 14-11 in the loss, controlled the possession for the majority of the contest but were unable to put one past WKU goalie Alexis Bach, who finished with seven saves.

Western Kentucky also struggled to generate scoring chances, with its best opportunities coming off the set pieces from the corner.  The Hilltoppers earned five corner kicks, while limiting FIU to none.

FIU goalie Maaike Van Klink made her first start of the season for the Panthers and tallied three saves.

Noemi Paquin and Nikole Solis paced the Panther offense with a team-high three shots each.  Kim Schneider and Catherine Rapp also generated a pair of chances in defeat for FIU.

With the loss, the Panthers slip to 2-6-3 overall and 0-3-3 in C-USA action.  Western Kentucky moves to 5-5-3 on the season and 2-2-1 in the conference loop.
