Charlotte, NC. - The FIU women's volleyball team (4-15, 1-5 C-USA) dropped its fifth game in Conference USA action after losing 3-2 (13-25, 25-22, 19-25, 22-25) against the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (7-10,1-4 C-USA) on Sunday afternoon.
The 49ers won the first set easily 25-13. The Panthers never led in the opening set but kept it close early on. When the Panthers cut Charlotte's lead to 16-12, the 49ers responded with an impressive 9-1 scoring to close out the first set.
The Panthers came back and tied the match in the second set winning 25-22. FIU never had a comfortable lead in this set and their biggest lead was only four. Both teams were trading points and Charlotte took the lead briefly when it was 13-12. After that, FIU rattled off three consecutive points to take the lead and take control of the set from that point on.
In the third set, FIU fell to the 49ers 25-22. The Panthers suffered an injury to setter
Camila De La Rosa. The injury occurred when the 49ers were leading in the set 6-4. The match was delayed for about 30 minutes and played resumed after both teams had an opportunity to warm back up.
Sarah Nading replaced De La Rosa at setter and both players finished the match with 23 assists each.
The 49ers closed out the Panthers in the fourth set 25-22. For most of this set, Charlotte had the lead and it extended to six points when it was 16-10. The Panthers slowly clawed their way back and tied it up at 20-20. Unfortunately, their comeback would fall short, and Charlotte finished the set on a 5-2 run.
Three different Panthers finished with double digit kills. Outside Hitter,
Emily Meyer, led FIU with 15 kills and chipped in eight digs.
Alyssa Wissinger recorded 12 kills at a .579 clip and
Jade Sadeiko was third on the team with 11 kills.
Katie Turner led both teams with 23 digs.
UP NEXT
The Panthers are headed back home and will only play one match next week. They will take on Middle Tennessee State University a week from today on Sunday, Oct. 16 slated to start at 1:00 p.m. ET.
