Afrifa Powers No. 22 Men’s Soccer Past Memphis, 1-0, and into The American Championship Match

Panthers push unbeaten streak to six

MIAMI (Nov. 10, 2022) – No. 22 Men's Soccer was at home, Thursday night, hosting Memphis in an American Athletic Conference semifinal, eliminating the Tigers, 1-0, and punching the Panthers' ticket into the Championship match.
 
An amazing solo effort by senior Stephen Afrifa in the 52nd minute proved to be the match-winner and his 10th goal of the season.
 
The Panthers will know take on No. 3 seed USF, Sunday, November 13 with kickoff set for 1 p.m. ET at FIU Soccer Stadium.
 
The first half was a hard-fought battle as both sides looked to wrestle control of the crucial semifinal match.
 
The offenses came out fast, with both sides forcing saves within the first four minutes of the match.
 
FIU would go on to outshoot Memphis 10 to one, but the score remained locked at 0-0 headed into halftime.
 
The Panthers offense would continue to apply pressure throughout the second half, eventually finding a match-winner.
 
12 minutes into the second half, Afrifa would pounce on a slow back pass in Memphis' own end, dribble around the keeper and slot home the goal to put FIU ahead 1-0.
 
Afrifa nearly notched a brace in the 71st minute when his curled shot caught the far post and ricocheted out and away from the goal line.
 
As time ticked away Memphis looked to find an equalizer, but the FIU defense stepped up to keep the Tigers at bay.
 
In the 83rd minute, freshman Joao Domingues played hero, making two back-to-back goal line clearances to preserve the Panthers' advantage.
 
FIU would eventually secure the, 1-0, shutout victory and move on to face No. 3 seed USF in the American Athletic Conference Championship match.
 
UP NEXT
No. 1 seed FIU hosts No. 3 USF, Sunday, November 13 in the final of The American Championship. Kickoff at FIU Soccer Stadium is set for 1 p.m. ET and the match will be streamed live on ESPN+.
