MIAMI, Fla. – The FIU women's basketball team wrapped up their opening week of the 2022-2023 season with a loss against Florida Gulf Coast University 92-63 as four different Panthers recorded double digit points.
The Panthers and Eagles were in a close matchup in the first quarter and FIU was out to an early 9-3 lead. Later in the opening quarter the Panthers lead was cut to 15-14. From that point, the Eagles went on a 7-0 scoring run to finish the quarter leading 21-15. The Panthers' defense held FGCU to 33% shooting in the first quarter.
The Eagles outscored the Panthers 25-12 in the second quarter to take a 19-point lead at the half. FGCU continued to knock down three-point shots in the second half to extend their lead past 25 points. The Eagles finished the game making 15 shots from beyond the arc.
The Panthers' offense outperformed the Eagles in the fourth quarter, but FGCU's lead was too large to overcome in one quarter. FIU scored 25 points in the fourth quarter and shot 56% from the field and 50% from three (3-6).
Redshirt freshman,
Sifa Joyeuse led the offensive attack by the Panthers with 15 points and grabbed four rebounds. Senior guard,
Kaliah Henderson, and junior forward,
Maria Torres, each finished with 11 points and were tied for the team lead with six rebounds. Sophomore guard
Tanajah Hayes was a spark off the bench contributing 10 points and dished out three assists.
UP NEXT
The Panthers will have almost a full week off until their next game. They will be on the road for the first time this season to take on Jacksonville University on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 1:00 p.m. E.T.
