CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Feb. 21, 2022) - The FIU women's basketball team fell on the road to Charlotte on Monday evening by a score of 41-53 at the Dale F. Halton Arena.
The Panthers' record fell to 12-13 on the season and 4-10 in Conference USA play. Charlotte improved 16-8 overall and 12-2 in the league.
Grace Hunter and
Maria Torres scored eight points apiece.
Hope Butera hauled in a season-high 10 rebounds.
FIU out-rebounded Charlotte 50-44, while the Panther bench outscored the 49ers' second unit 24-15.
Defensively, the Blue & Gold forced 15 Charlotte turnovers and posted seven steals and three blocks
The Panthers were ahead in the first quarter by a score of 10-8 before the 49ers went on a run to close out the first period up 11-19.
Trailing 27-17 at halftime, FIU outscored Charlotte 14-11 in the third quarter and managed to pull within seven points (31-38) to end the period. FIU was efficient from the free-throw line through the first three frames, shooting 12-for-13 at the charity stripe.
After going down double figures in the fourth quarter, the Panthers scored three unanswered buckets to cut the deficit to only eight points (37-45) with 3:01 remaining, but Charlotte strung together a run and pulled away from FIU to secure the win.

FIU looks to strike back against Charlotte this Thursday, Feb. 24, when the Panthers host the 49ers at the Ocean Bank Convocation Center. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. ET.
