FIU Softball Drops Conference USA Opener to UAB, 8-0

Panthers and Blazers continue weekend three-game set on Saturday at 6 p.m. ET

MIAMI – The FIU softball team had multiple opportunities to push runs across but stranded a total of five runners over the third and fourth innings in an 8-0 loss to UAB on Friday night in the Conference USA opener for both teams.

The loss drops the Panthers overall mark to 14-11 and 0-1 in Conference USA action.  UAB moves to 13-9 on the season and 1-0 in league play.

UAB (13-9, 1-0) scored the game's first run in the top of the first on an RBI triple by Sierra Frazier to right field, scoring
Bella Wiggins, who opened the contest with a leadoff single.

Jolie Readeaux added to the Blazers' lead with a two-out, two RBI double to increase the advantage to 3-0 in the top of the third.

The Panthers had chances in both the fourth and the fifth to chip into the UAB lead.  Kayla Whitehead grounded out to second with runners on second and third in the fourth.  Then after the Panthers loaded the bases in the fifth with one out, Gabby Ruiz popped out and Brianna Hill flied out to center to leave the runners stranded and end the threat.

UAB tacked on another two runs in the top of the fifth on a second RBI single by Frazier and a sacrifice fly from Lilly Crowe.  The Blazers opened the frame with three consecutive base hits.

Faith Heghe launched a double to deep right field to push across another two runs in the top of the sixth and Frazier added her third RBI of the contest with an RBI double to deep left to score Heghe to account for the final 8-0 margin.

FIU starter Kendahl Dunford (4-4) was tagged with the loss after allowing five runs and seven hits over four innings.

UAB's Sarah Cespedes (7-1) picked up the win after shutting out the Panthers over the final three innings.
