FIU Softball Runs Win Streak to Six with Twinbill Sweep of St. John’s

Panthers score in first inning in both victories, never trail

MIAMI – The FIU softball team took control early with first inning runs in both of its wins to extend its winning streak to six consecutive games with a sweep of a doubleheader against St. John's on Wednesday afternoon at FIU Softball Stadium.

The Panthers opened with a 5-1 win in game one before following up with a 2-1 victory in game two against the Red Storm to improve its overall record to 10-9.

In the opener, Kayla Whitehead scored in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly by Brittany Phillips to give the Panthers an early 1-0 edge.  FIU put the game out of reach with a four-run fourth inning that was sparked by a two-RBI double from Venessa Gallegos and a run-scoring double by Makayla Garcia.

Senior starter Kendahl Dunford went the distance for her fourth complete game of the season while limiting St. John's to just one unearned run and two hits.  She walked a pair and struck out a career-high 12 in evening her record to 3-3 on the season.

Gallegos finished with three hits and two RBI to pace the offense.  Junior Madison Lewis also tabbed a pair of hits in the victory.

Sophomore Brooklyn Linneman (4-1) gave the Panthers their second straight complete-game performance in FIU's 2-1 win in game two.  Linneman allowed three hits and one run and fanned four.

The Panthers got all the runs they needed with two in the bottom of the first.  Lewis ripped a triple to drive in Brittany Phillips before Gallegos followed with her fourth hit and third RBI of the day with a single that plated Lewis for a 2-0 lead.

St. John's scored a run in the top of the third to get within 2-1 on an RBI single to center by London Jarrard, but Linneman would limit the Red Storm offense to just one single the rest of the contest.
