BOCA RATON, Florida (Mar. 2, 2022) - The FIU women's basketball team secured a dominant win against rival FAU on the road on Wednesday night, as the Panthers defeated the Owls by a score of 73-55 at FAU Arena.
FIU improved to 13-15 on the season and 5-12 in Conference USA play, while FAU fell to 5-23 and 1-16 in the league.
Kyla Nelson led FIU with 16 points on the night, while Maria Torres logged a season-high 13 points. FIU saw four panthers score in double digits with Tanajah Hayes (12) and Grace Hunter (11) chipping in.
The Blue & Gold defense held the Owls to only 37 percent shooting in the contest and forced 18 FAU turnovers along the way. On the opposite end of the floor, the Panther offense shot an efficient 48 percent from the field and 90 percent from the free-throw line.
The Panthers and Owls went bucket for bucket in the first quarter and entered the second quarter knotted up at 10-10.
FIU separated from FAU in the second quarter as the Panthers outscored the Owls by a whopping margin of 24-10 in the frame.
Leading 34-20 to start the second half, the Panthers kept their foot on the gas and never let up the rest of the contest. FIU outscored FAU 39-35 in the last 20 minutes and held the Owls to only 35% shooting in the fourth quarter as the Panthers held onto a double-figure lead and never relinquished it.
The Panther offense shot 73 percent from the floor in the third period and 54 percent in the fourth, propelling FIU to a big road win over its rival C-USA counterpart from Boca Raton.
