FIU Falls In Saturday Afternoon Affair at UTSA

Panthers wrap up Texas swing on Sunday at Noon ET

SAN ANTONIO (April 23, 2022) – The FIU Baseball team dropped the middle game of the three-game weekend set 8-1 to the UTSA Roadrunners on Saturday afternoon.

The lone Panther hit of the day came off the bat of Jayden Melendez when the freshman catcher poked a blooper to center in the top of the sixth.

Despite being one-hit on the afternoon, The Panthers drew nine walks as a squad. Shortstop Steven Ondina collected three free passes of his own, while Mathew Gonzalez walked twice.

Patrick Pridgen was handed the loss for FIU after allowing four earned runs over five innings. Pridgen also fanned six Roadrunners.

Freshman reliever Owen Puk struck out the side in the eighth for his best outing in his young Panther career.

FIU was down 2-0 in the third when Robert Sotolongo, who reached via walk, scored on a wild pitch for the lone Panther run of the afternoon.

The Roadrunners answered right back with a pair in the third before playing two more in the sixth and seventh for the 8-1 final.
