2022 NCAA WOMEN'S TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP BRACKET
MIAMI – The No. 41 FIU women's tennis team has earned an at-large berth to the 2022 NCAA Women's Tennis Championship and will open play on Saturday, May 7 vs. No. 35 Florida State on the campus of the University of Florida in Gainesville. Start time is 11 a.m. ET.
The winner of Saturday's match between the Panthers and Seminoles will advance to the round of 32 where they will take on the victor of the opening round match between No. 16 seed University of Florida and South Alabama on Sunday, May 8 at 1 p.m. ET.
This marks the 11
th time in program history that the Panthers have qualified for the NCAA Championship and the second consecutive season after also earning a berth last season.
FIU is 4-10 overall in previous appearances in the NCAA Championship and has advanced to the round of 32 on four previous occasions, with the most recent coming in 2009.
The Panthers enter the 2022 NCAA Championships having won 15 of their last 17 dual matches overall. FIU advanced to the semifinal round of last week's Conference USA Championship.
In singles action the Panthers have been led by a group that includes freshman
Yasmine Kabbaj (No. 1), senior
Kamila Umarova (No. 2), sophomore
Andjela Skrobonja (No. 3), junior
Kristina Miletic (No. 4), sophomore
Andreea Velcea (No. 5) and senior
Basak Akbas (No. 6).
Kabbaj, who has been nationally ranked a majority of the season and was recently honored as Conference USA Freshman of the Year, has posted an 19-5 overall mark in singles action while playing in the No. 1 position. Kabbaj has won each of her last 13 dual matches and 11 of those 13 victories came in straight sets.
Umarova has won each of her last 17 singles clashes. She has also paired up with Skrobonja to tally a 14-5 record at the No. 1 doubles slot. The duo has won 10 of their last 12 matches overall and are ranked as the nation's No. 79 doubles tandem.
As a team, FIU is ranked No. 41 in the most recent ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings and currently boasts an overall record of 17-4. No. 35 Florida State enters Saturday's first round match 14-10 on the season.
