MIAMI – The #23 ranked FIU Men's Soccer team is set for a pair of non-conference matches, beginning Saturday night as they host the Saint Mary's Gaels from FIU Soccer Stadium
Saturday, Oct. 14 vs. Saint Mary's Gaels (5-4-2 0-2 WCC)
FIU comes off a hard fought 2-2 draw this past Sunday, Oct. 8 against the #3 ranked SMU Mustangs.
The Panthers trailed 2-0 in first half, before securing goals from
Edgar Aguilar and
Bernardo Dos Santos Monteiro to even the pivotal AAC matchup.
With the draw, Aguilar earned Defensive Player of the Week honors for tallying his first career goal. In addition,
Diego Castillo was named to the weekly honor roll for his pair of assists off the bench.
FIU's 4-0-1 start marks the best start in AAC play in program history and sit atop of the AAC standings.
The league-leading AAC scoring offense is led by junior
Eduardo Mustre, who leads the team in goals (7) and points (15) in his first season donning the Blue & Gold. The Córdoba, Mexico native is third in the AAC in goals and second in shots.
Dos Santos Monteiro has shined in conference play with three goals and seven points for the junior.
Veteran
Fumiya Shiraishi and Dos Santos Monteiro have been impactful with 43 shots combined on the campaign.
On the backline,
Owen Travis leads the team on defense having played in a total of 979 minutes on the pitch.
In net, goalkeeper
Tyler Hogan has started in eight games with a 0.95 goals against average and totaled for 21 saves. In addition, his save percentage of .724 is third in the conference.
INTERNATIONAL
FIU embraces its name with a truly international roster. This season's Panthers have players from 15 different countries.
The USA leads the way with four players. Denmark, Mexico and France each have three representatives. Portugal, Japan and Germany have two representatives each.
SCOUTING THE GAELS
Saint Mary's enters the non-conference matchup comes into the contest with a 5-4-2 record, heading down to Miami for the first time in program history.
The Gaels, out of the West Coast Conference, comes off a 2-1 loss to San Diego, this past Saturday, Oct. 7.
Offensively, Saint Mary's is led by junior Riley Lynch, who leads the Gaels in goals (4) and points (12). Tyler Hardin and Wade Muttitt each pace in second with three goals each.
In net, Jack Landreth has started in ten games with 34 saves and a 1.40 GAA. Landreth has also tallied for three shutouts this season.
