BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — FIU's 25th-ranked men's soccer program secured a 1-0 win at the University of Alabama-Birmingham on Wednesday evening to remain undefeated in American Athletic Conference (AAC) action.
Eduardo Mustre put the Panthers (6-2-2, 4-0 AAC) ahead in the 10th minute and FIU's defense locked down from there, securing its first clean sheet in AAC play and fourth-straight win to open the conference season.
Mustre's goal was assisted by Paulo Alves as Mustre settled a bouncing ball from Alves in the box, transferred the ball to his left and slotted home a curling shot past a diving UAB goalkeeper. The tally for the junior from Cordoba, Mexico is his eighth of the season, which ties him for the American Conference lead.
Tyler Hogan stopped one shot and earned the clean sheet in net, playing all 90 minutes. The matchup was very even going forward with nine shots, two on goal for FIU and eight shots, one on goal for UAB.
The Panthers take on No. 3 SMU next on Sunday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m. inside the FIU Soccer Stadium. The match will be live streamed on ESPN+.
