RUSTON, La. – The No. 4 seed FIU women's soccer team were unable to overcome an early 3-0 deficit as it fell by a 3-2 margin to No. 5 seed Sam Houston in the 2023 Conference USA Championship Quarterfinals on Wednesday night in Ruston, La.
The Bearkats scored three goals in the opening 12:26 of the match to open the early edge. FIU responded with a pair of goals over a 12:47 stretch late in the first half – the first coming from
Nikole Solis at 31:04 before
Barbara Garcia added her second tally of the season at 43:51 to trim the margin to 3-2.
Solis' goal marked her 10th of the season – which is the most by a Panther in a single season since 2012.
The teams played a scoreless second half – one which saw FIU outshoot Sam Houston 9-1 as it attempted to battle back. Overall, for the match, the Panthers outshot the Bearkats 22-9.
Sam Houston goalie Libby Harper made nine saves in the win, while
Gwen Jordan made four stops for the Panthers.
The loss drops the Panthers' overall record to 8-6-4 overall – the eight wins mark the most for the program since 2015.
