FIU Women's Hoops Sets Their Eyes on FGCU

FIU will travel to FGCU for their third game of the season

Fort Myers, Fla. - The FIU women's basketball team (2-0, 0-0 C-USA) will head across the Sunshine State and face-off against Florida Gulf Coast University for their second road game in a row. The game will be held at FGCU's Alico Arena on Tuesday, November 14 at 7 P.M.

The Panthers are coming off a win over University of Texas Rio Grande Valley where senior forward Maria Torres hit a game-winning layup with 1.8 seconds left on the clock to put FIU in the lead and secure the win. 

Torres was a force on defense, ending the game with three steals, as well as making her presence known down low, where she had three offensive and three defensive rebounds. Torres's night would end with four points, going 2-2 from the foul line to go along with her game-clinching bucket.

Senior forward Ajae Yoakum led the team with 13 points off the bench. She went 80% from the field as well as a perfect 4-4 from the foul line. She would end the game with six rebounds to go along with an assist, as well as a block to round out her efficient night.

Mya Kone, Courtney Prenger, and Olivia Trice would all score 10 points with Kone hitting all eight of her free throws. As a team, the Panthers would shoot a stellar 21-22 from the free throw line.

In a game where both teams shot a combined 34.4% from the field, 10 of FIU's 11 players who saw the court on Friday scored. FIU would outscore UTRGV in second chance points (10-8), fast break points (11-8), points in the paint (30-22) and bench points (35-0).

Scouting FGCU

FGCU will go into Tuesday's bout with a record of 1-1, with their one loss coming last Friday at the hands of #21 USC. 

FGCU is led by fifth year senior Uju Ezeudu, and redshirt Junior Maddie Antenucci, who are both averaging at least 15 points per game so far in the young season. As a team, FGCU is averaging 65.5 points per game on 39% shooting. The Eagles and Panthers compare similarly in field goal percentage, where FIU is also averaging 39%, as well as free throw percentage, where FIU has the slight edge, averaging 73% compared to FGCU's 71%. 

On Tuesday, FIU will look to gain their first win in program history over FGCU. They are currently winless in 14 contests against the Eagles dating back to their first match in 2009.
