Women's Basketball Opens up the FIU Thanksgiving Tournament Against Bryant

Ajae Yoakum comes off her first double-double of the season

Miami, Fla - FIU Women's Hoops (2-2, 0-0 C-USA) will play in the first game of the annual FIU Thanksgiving Tournament against Bryant University (3-2, 0-0 AEC). The weekend long tournament will be held at the Oceanbank Convocation Center, with FIU's first game on Friday, November 24th at 12 P.M.

FIU will go into Friday's contest coming off their second loss in a row at the hands of Coppin State.

The Panthers would find themselves in a deficit at the end of the first half, but would claw their way back thanks to a great performance from senior forward Ajae Yoakum. Yoakum would play 33 minutes in the game, putting up 19 points and 11 rebounds, good for her third double-double of her career and first of the season.

Graduate student Courtney Prenger would also have double digit points in the match, scoring 13 points on 5-7 shooting, including a perfect 3-3 from behind the arc. 

The Panthers would lead the game in points off turnovers (25), second chance points (12), fast break points (14), and bench points (33).

Scouting Bryant

The Bulldogs will come into Friday's contest coming off a 65-60 loss to Merrimack College on Tuesday, dropping their record to 3-2 on the season.

Bryant is led by senior Mariona Planes Fortuny and first year Mia Manchini. Through four games this season, Fortuny is averaging 14.8 points a game on 68.9% shooting. The senior center compliments her efficient shooting with 5.5 rebounds, a block and a steal per game. 

First year guard Mia Manchini has started the year averaging 16.8 points per game on 46.7% shooting and 50% from three. Manchini leads her team in scoring while playing 31 minutes a game, trailing only senior guard Kemari Reynolds (33.3 Min/G) for most on the team.

Bryant plays in the America East Conference, placing fifth in both total offense (64 pts/g) and total defense (60.8 pts/g). Mia Manchini and Mariona Planes Fortuny are second and fifth in the conference in scoring.
