MIAMI, Fla - The FIU women's basketball team (3-4) fell 81-69 to Georgia Southern University (6-2) at the Ocean Bank Convocation Center Saturday afternoon.
FIU struggled to get into rhythm throughout the game, going down early and unable to mount a comeback despite going 80.6% from the free throw line and racking up 10 total steals. Olivia Trice and Junior Aileen Marquez combined for eight total steals, with Trice stealing five and Marquez swiping three.
It was a tough night from the field for the Panthers. As a team, FIU shot 29.2% from the field and 20% from behind the arc. It was their second worst shooting game of the year, only behind FGCU, but it was their worst shooting day from 3-point range on the season. In a game where the home team came in first in C-USA in 3-point percentage, the Panthers were unable to find a groove from three.
FIU had two players score in double digits in the contest. Angena Belloso delivered the best overall shooting day for the Panthers, shooting 50% from the field, including 1-2 from three, and 4-4 from the free throw line, good for 11 points on the day before she fouled out. Sariana Camacho Rodriguez put up 10 points on the day, with half of her points coming at the free throw line where she went 5-6.
The refs were relentless with the whistles, with the Panthers having four players foul out in the game, their most in the 2023-2024 campaign. Sophomores Mya Kone and Angena Belloso, senior Ajae Yoakum, and graduate student Olivia Trice all fouled out in the game. All of which were the players' first times fouling out on the season, except for Ajae Yoakum who fouled out against FGCU. There were 51 total fouls called against both teams in the game, 26 for the Eagles and 25 for the Panthers, tying the game against FGCU for most in the 2023-2024 season.
