Women's Hoops Earns a Big Win Over Jacksonville

Olivia Trice puts up a career high in points with 21

MIAMI,  Fla - The FIU women's basketball team won 88-81 against Jacksonville University Friday night at the Oceanbank Convocation Center.

FIU (4-4) got the scoring started early, with graduate student Olivia Trice putting up five quick points out of the gate, kicking off what would be a career night for the guard. Trice ended the night with 21 points on 7-13 shooting and 4-9 from behind the arc. The 21 points sets a new career high for Trice, passing her initial career high of 17, which the transfer student achieved at her previous school of Bowling Green State.

The Panthers went into the break down three points, but came out swinging in the second half thanks to seven quick Courtney Prenger points. The graduate student put up nine of her 19 points in the third quarter, helping the Panthers take the lead in the third and never look back.

With Jacksonville cutting the lead down to four with 13 seconds left in the game, junior Courtney Turner delivered a clutch bucket to give FIU some much needed breathing room. It would be the last of a career high night for Turner, ending with 12 points on 6-9 shooting and eight rebounds.

Trice, Prenger, and Ajae Yoakum led what turned out to be a three-headed-monster in tonight's contest. Senior Ajae Yoakum finished her night with an 18-point double-double, her second of the year. Out of the forward's 10 rebounds, an astonishing seven boards came on the offensive side, helping the Panthers 16-8 advantage in second chance points.

The Panthers forced 25 turnovers on the night, with Trice and Yoakum combining for six of FIU's nine steals, helping the home team win the points off turnovers battle 32-16.
