MIAMI – The FIU women's basketball team scored early and often as it rolled to a 113-30 season-opening victory over Florida National University on Monday night at the Ocean Bank Convocation Center in Miami.
The Panthers ran out to an early 10-0 edge and continued to build on its lead as it outscored Florida National 57-20 over the opening 20 minutes – which saw them connect on seven three pointers and force 27 points off 17 turnovers by the Conquistadors in the first half.
FIU (1-0) kept the pressure up on both ends of the floor in the second half as it stretched its lead 65 points at 90-25 by the conclusion of the third quarter. It was more of the same in the final quarter as the Panthers outscored Florida National 23-5 over the final 10 minutes.
The Panthers limited the Conquistadors to single-digit scoring totals in each of the final three quarters after allowing 11 in the first.
All 12 players registered points for the Panthers in the win and five finished in double-figures – including
Mya Kone and
Tanajah Hayes, who each posted a game-high 17 points.
FIU outrebounded Florida National 79-30, including 32 offensive boards. The Panthers also forced a total of 33 turnovers – which led to 45 points.
The FIU defense held Florida National to a total of eight field goals and a 13.8 field goal percentage.
