Women's Basketball Travels to UT Rio Grande Valley for First Road Contest of the Season

FIU comes off a 83-point win over Florida National

EDINBURG, Texas - The FIU women's basketball team (1-0, 0-0 C-USA) will embark on its first road trip of the season when it travels to Texas where they will face the Vaqueros of The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.
 

Friday, November 10th at UTRGV (0-1, 0-0 WAC)

The Panthers offense came alive in their first contest of the 2023-2024 season, outscoring Florida National, by an astounding 83 points, five shy of tying the program's all time win margin record.

Sophomore transfer Mya Kone was all over the court in the Panthers' first game of the season, recording a double-double with 20 points and 14 rebounds. As a team, FIU out-rebounded FNU 79-30 in the meeting.

Along with Kone, Courtney Prenger (13), Angena Belloso (10), Tanajah Hayes (16), and Aileen Marquez (12) would also reach double digits in points, with Prenger achieving a double-double as well, bringing in 11 rebounds.

It was a defensive clinic for the Panthers. As a team, FIU totaled 22 steals and 7 blocks, while forcing 33 turnovers, resulting in 45 points off turnovers.

SCOUTING UTRGV
The Vaqueros will look to rebound from a subpar 2022-2023 season after achieving a 12-18 record, going 6-12 in conference play, good for 10th in the Western Athletic Conference. 

UTRGV is led by a seasoned group, with 11 of the 16 rostered players being Juniors or older. They are led by Junior Iyana Dorsey, who averaged 16 points per game last season during her sophomore campaign.


UP NEXT
The Panthers will once again be on the road at Florida Gulf Coast University on Tuesday, November 14th. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 P.M. and will be available on ESPN+.
