Softball Drops a Pair of Games to Power Five Foes During Panther Invitational

Panthers close out weekend against Butler on Sunday in 12:30 p.m. first pitch

MIAMI – The FIU softball lost a pair of games against Power Five opponents during the second day of the Panther Invitational on Saturday in Miami.

The Panthers opened the day with an 8-0 setback against No. 23 Missouri before dropping a 12-3 decision against Pittsburgh in the evening finale.

FIU (5-5) will play its final game of the Panther Invitational on Sunday, Feb. 18 against Butler in a 12:30 p.m. first pitch that will be aired live on Conference USA TV.

Sophomore Brooke McCann ripped a run-scoring double that plated Makayla Navarro to give the Panthers an early 1-0 edge against Pittsburgh, before Pitt responded with a six-run effort in its half of the first to claim the lead for good.

FIU got as close as 6-3 with a couple of runs in the third.  Abigail Brown laced a double to plate Navarro, who set up the Panthers' previous run in the inning with a steal of second that forced an errant throw, allowing Amelia Varela to score from third.

Pittsburgh (6-2) salted away the victory with three runs in the bottom of the sixth.

No. 23 Missouri held the Panthers without a hit in its 8-0 victory in the opening contest of the day.  The Tigers used a five-run third inning to take control.

Alex Honold led Missouri offensively with three hits, three RBI and two runs scored.  Riley Frizell added a pair of hits, including a homer and three RBI.

Jordan Webber (2-2) earned the win while holding FIU without and run or a hit.  She walked two and struck out four.
