MIAMI – The FIU softball lost a pair of games against Power Five opponents during the second day of the Panther Invitational on Saturday in Miami.
The Panthers opened the day with an 8-0 setback against No. 23 Missouri before dropping a 12-3 decision against Pittsburgh in the evening finale.
FIU (5-5) will play its final game of the Panther Invitational on Sunday, Feb. 18 against Butler in a 12:30 p.m. first pitch that will
be aired live on Conference USA TV.
Sophomore
Brooke McCann ripped a run-scoring double that plated
Makayla Navarro to give the Panthers an early 1-0 edge against Pittsburgh, before Pitt responded with a six-run effort in its half of the first to claim the lead for good.
FIU got as close as 6-3 with a couple of runs in the third.
Abigail Brown laced a double to plate Navarro, who set up the Panthers' previous run in the inning with a steal of second that forced an errant throw, allowing
Amelia Varela to score from third.
Pittsburgh (6-2) salted away the victory with three runs in the bottom of the sixth.
No. 23 Missouri held the Panthers without a hit in its 8-0 victory in the opening contest of the day. The Tigers used a five-run third inning to take control.
Alex Honold led Missouri offensively with three hits, three RBI and two runs scored. Riley Frizell added a pair of hits, including a homer and three RBI.
Jordan Webber (2-2) earned the win while holding FIU without and run or a hit. She walked two and struck out four.
All five of FIU's losses this season have come against nationally ranked and/or Power Five opponents.
