Baseball Hosts Bethune-Cookman in Midweek Clash

Panthers look to capture second win of 2023

MIAMI (Feb. 20, 2022) – Baseball welcomes Bethune-Cookman to FIU Baseball Stadium on Tuesday February 21 at 6:00 p.m. in the first of two matchups this season.
 
FIRST OF MANY
The Panthers earned their first win of the season last Saturday after defeating George Mason, 3-2.
 
This marked head coach Rich Witten's first win at the helm of the program and his first win as a head coach.
 
ATTACKING THE ZONE
FIU's pitching depth was on full display last week as 11 different pitchers took the mound.
 
Seven pitchers finished the first series of the season with an ERA of 3.00 or lower, with five holding an ERA of 0.00.
 
Opening day starter Ryan Cabarcas struck out seven of the 14 batters he faced in his four innings of work, a team high. Redshirt sophomore Daniel McAuliff picked up four strikeouts in just 1.2 innings pitched.
 
The Panthers struck out a total of 25 George Mason batters and issued just three walks.
 
HEATING UP
The Panthers registered 20 hits across the three games against George Mason with five going for extra bases.
 
Five players logged multiple hits for the series led by redshirt senior Alec Sanchez. Sanchez would go 5-12 against the Patriots, hitting a double and solo home run. Fellow redshirt senior Mike Rosario showed pop, hitting a home run in first-ever at bat as a Panther.
 
Rosario and junior Ryne Guida combined to score four of FIU's seven runs with two RBI each.
 
SCOUTING THE WILDCATS
Bethune-Cookman holds a 2-1 record after taking a series against Lehigh at home last week. The Wildcats scored 14 runs but also allowed 14 runs against Lehigh.
 
Senior Colton Olasin led the Wildcats in the batter's box. He went 4-10, drove in a team-high four runs and stole a base.
 
On the mound, junior Nolan Santos was strong in his first appearance of 2023. In 5.1 innings of work, he gave up two hits and struck out 11 of the 18 batters he faced.
 
FIU leads the all-time series with Bethune-Cookman 18-9 and have won the last eight against the the Wildcats. The Panthers came away with a 7-1 victory in the last meeting between the two sides at FIU Baseball Stadium.
 
UP NEXT
The Panthers host the SEC's Missouri for a four-game set this week. Game one is on Thursday February 23 with first pitch at FIU Baseball Stadium is set for 6:30 p.m.
