Softball Defeats Valparaiso 6-1 on Opening Day of The Spring Games

Panthers rally with six runs over final three innings

MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – The FIU softball team erased a 1-0 deficit with a four-run fifth inning and freshman Ella Whitney slammed her first collegiate homer, while fellow freshman Megan Kruger went the distance in the circle to pace the Panthers to a 6-1 victory over Valparaiso on Friday afternoon during the opening day of action at The Spring Games.

The Panthers (7-6) loaded the bases with one out in the top of the fifth when Isabella Perez laced a double to right field to score Abigail Brown and Hanna Johanning to put FIU ahead for good at 2-1.  The Panthers added a pair of unearned runs to close out the inning and extend their lead to 4-1.

Whitney hit her first career homer with two outs in the sixth to increase the margin to 5-1.  Sophomore Brooke McCann added an RBI single in the seventh to plate sophomore Ashton Lansdell for the final run of the contest.

Kruger (1-1) went the full seven innings and limited Valparaiso to four hits, one unearned run and recorded three strikeouts.

Easton Seib (1-2) took the loss for Crusaders after allowing six hits and five runs, three of which were earned over six innings of work.

Seven different players registered a hit for the Panthers in the win.  FIU finished the contest with four stolen bases as both Brown and Lansdell swiped two.

In the opening game of the day vs. Dartmouth, the Panthers let a 2-0 advantage slip away as the Big Green escaped with a 3-2 win.

FIU took an early lead in the top of the first on an RBI single by Carmen Perez before adding a second tally in the third when Landell scored on an error by Dartmouth shortstop Kate Farren.

That lead stuck until the bottom of the sixth when Dartmouth (1-0) took the lead with a three-run flurry that was keyed by a two-RBI double by Farren and a run-scoring base hit from Ashley Frantz.
