MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – Sophomore
Ashton Lansdell led off the game with a home run to left and the Panthers piled on with nine runs over the final four innings as the FIU softball team cruised to a 10-2 victory over Oakland University on Saturday afternoon in its second game of the day at The Spring Games.
The Panthers (8-7) did actually trail for a moment in the win over the Bears as Oakland responded to Lansdell's blast with a pair of runs on a double by Maci Brown in the bottom of the first, before FIU took complete control with nine unanswered scores.
Back-to-back singles by freshman
Kaleena Downing and Lansdell led to three more runs in the third, which saw the Panthers claim the lead for good at 5-2. Each player stole a base and an overthrow by Oakland's catcher Taylor Carraway led to the first score of the frame. Freshman
Isabella Perez drove in a second with an RBI single and the Panthers added the final run on another Oakland miscue.
Downing added another run in the fourth when she led off with a single, before coming home on a sacrifice fly from Lansdell to up the margin to 6-2.
Freshman
Logan Turner launched a double to deep center in the top of the fifth that scored a pair and made the score 8-2.
The Panthers added two more runs in the sixth on a run-scoring double by
Makayla Navarro and a sacrifice fly from
Abigail Brown to account for the final 10-2 margin.
FIU held Oakland scoreless for the bottom half of the sixth to trigger the run-rule that halts a game if the margin is greater than eight runs after five innings have been played.
Freshman pitcher
Brooke McNichols (4-0) improved to a perfect 4-0 on the year after tossing all six innings while limiting the Bears to three hits and two runs.
The Panthers swiped three bases in the victory and posted a season-high 14 hits – their fourth multi-hit performance of the season. Lansdell posted three hits, three runs and two RBI.
Isabella Perez also recorded three knocks, while driving in one and scoring three.
Carmen Perez, Brown and Downing each posted two hits in the win for FIU.
In the opener on Saturday, the Panthers battled Notre Dame to a scoreless tie for the opening four frames before the Irish finally got on the board with a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth of what would eventually end in a 4-0 setback for FIU.
Notre Dame (7-4) added a single run in the sixth and a pair in the seventh before the Panthers attempted to mount a comeback in the bottom of the seventh as they sent the tying run to the plate with two outs and the bases loaded before coming away empty.
Overall, the loss saw the Panthers leave a total of 10 runners on base – as they worked Notre Dame pitchers for a total of six walks.
