FIU Men's Hoops Opens Final Road Swing at Louisiana Tech

MIAMI, Fla. – The FIU men's basketball team begins its final road swing of the regular season this weekend, opening with Louisiana Tech in Ruston, La., on Thursday, Mar. 2, for a 7 p.m. ET matchup inside Thomas Assembly Center.

Entering the final week of the regular season, the Panthers look to snap a four-game skid and finish the season on a high note entering next week's 2023 Conference USA Championships in Dallas, Texas.

The Panthers come off a 95-91 loss to UTSA on Saturday (Feb. 25), seeing graduate guard John Williams Jr. and sophomore guard Petar Kirivokapic pace the Panthers with season-highs of 18 and 17 points, respectively, on a combined 8-of-10 shooting from beyond the arc. Freshman Jayden Brewer added 15 points in 21 minutes off the bench for his second straight game in double figures after a career-high 22-point performance against UTEP last Thursday (Feb. 23).
 
Brewer was named the Conference USA Freshman of the Week for his performances last week, leading FIU with 18.5 ppg and 4.0 rpg on 80.0 percent shooting – marking the first time in program history FIU has had three different freshman selected in season and the first time since 2019 the feat has been accomplished by a team in the C-USA.
 
Denver Jones added 12 points, including a perfect 7-for-7 from the stripe, as the sophomore guard continues to pace FIU in scoring with 19.6 ppg. Jones leads the league in field goal percentage (49.2%) and free-throw percentage (85.4%), while ranking second amongst the C-USA in scoring.
 
Arturo Dean rounded out the Panthers in double figures on Saturday with 11 points, a season-high seven assists and five rebounds, as Dean moves into second all-time in program history in single-season assists by a freshman with 101 on the season.
 
Additionally, Dean paces the Panthers in rebounding (4.2), assists (3.5) and steals (2.4) – ranked sixth in the nation for steals (71) and eighth for steals per game (2.4).
 
LAST TIME OUT
FIU dropped the Bulldogs at home, 66-62, on Feb. 9, as Denver Jones led four Panthers in double figures with 21 points. Petar Krivokapic (12), Mohamed Sanogo (11) and Arturo Dean (10) all recorded double figures, as the Panthers erupted in the second half, connecting on 12-of-23 in the frame (52.2%) while also finishing 12-for-17 from the stripe (70.6%) over the final 20 minutes to secure the win.
 
Conversely, FIU clamped down to hold the Bulldogs to just 36.5 percent shooting overall for the game, including just 29.0 percent from three (9-of-31)
