MIAMI - Four different players drove in runs as the FIU softball team defeated Stonehill College 5-1 on Sunday afternoon in the final game of the 2023 FIU Classic.
The Panthers (12-10) never trailed in the win as it opened up a 2-0 in the bottom of the second with a run crossing following an overthrow on a sacrifice bunt attempt and an RBI single by freshman
Kaleena Downing.
FIU added three insurance runs in the sixth to make the score5-1 via a bases loaded walk by
Ashton Lansdell, an RBI single by freshman
Makayla Navarro and a sacrifice fly by
Isabella Perez.
Stonehill (0-10) scored its lone run of the contest when Isabella Therrien crossed from third on a wild pitch.
Navarro finished the game with two hits and was a perfect 3-for-3 on stolen bases attempts. Sophomore
Brooke McCann also recorded a pair of hits, including a double and scored once. Freshman
Logan Turner also posted a multiple hit effort with a double and a single along with a run scored.
Freshman
Megan Kruger (5-1) earned the win with 1.2 innings of relief which saw her limit the Skyhawks to just a single hit. Junior
Sydney Birling notched her first save of the season by pitching the final three innings of the contest while holding Stonehill hitless and scoreless. She fanned a season-high four hitters.
Skylar Brand (0-6) took the loss for Stonehill after allowing 10 hits and five runs over six innings. She struck out three and walked three.
UP NEXT
The Panthers will host Holy Cross in a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 7 at Felsberg Field in Miami.
First pitch is slated for 10 a.m. ET.
Both games are slated to be aired on Conference USA TV.
