MIAMI (April 8, 2023) – The FIU Baseball Team defeated Florida Atlantic, 16-2, on Saturday in seven innings. The Panthers scored nine runs in a sixth inning that featured back-to-back home runs by
Alec Sanchez and
Ryne Guida.
Six Panthers finished the game with multiple RBI led by Sanchez and
Ruben Carpio.
Carpio finished the day going 3-4 with three RBI and a walk, with Sanchez going 2-4 with three RBI, a walk and a home run.
Angel Tiburcio put in a great performance against Florida Atlantic, going five innings, allowing only two runs and striking out four to earn his third win of 2023.
The Panthers set the tone early in the game, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first.
A Carpio single and two-straight walks would load the bases for Guida who was then hit by a pitch to get FIU on the board.
Adrian Figueroa would then draw a five-pitch bases-loaded walk to push home another run and bring the score to 2-0.
The Owls would get on the board in the top of the third with a Nolan Schanuel RBI double down the left field line, making the score 2-1.
FIU responded in their half of the third with a Figueroa RBI single through the right side to put the Panthers ahead, 3-1.
The FIU bats stayed hot scoring four more runs in the fourth, pushing the lead to 7-1.
FAU's Bryan Boully opened the inning with three-consecutive walks. Carpio stepped into the box and delivered a double to deep left-center field to score two. Sanchez followed him up with a well hit RBI single into right-center field.
With two outs Guida would draw a walk to load the bases for Figueroa. Figueroa then hit a sharp ball to FAU's shortstop, Armando Albert, forcing an error from the Owl and allowing another run to score.
Florida Atlantic would score a run in the top of the fifth with Schanuel hitting his second RBI double of the game to bring the score to 7-2.
The Panthers would effectively end the game in the bottom of the sixth after pushing home nine runs.
Another bases loaded walk would get the scoring started as
Roylan Quevedo earned a six-pitch free pass.
Mike Rosario then slashed a double through the right side to score two and push the FIU advantage to 10-2.
The next batter was Carpio who picked up his third RBI of the day with a hard-hit single to the left-center field gap. Dante Giraridi followed Caripo with a two-run single of his own to make the score 13-2.
The offensive outburst was capped with consecutive home runs. Sanchez launched a ball over the center field wall with a man on base, followed up by solo shot over the left field wall by Guida.
The game was called at the conclusion of the seventh inning with FIU coming out on top, 16-2.

The Panthers are back on the road next week with a four-game road trip. They kick it off with a stop in Fort Meyers, Fla. to take on No. 15 Florida Gulf Coast on Wednesday April 12 with first pitch set for 6:30 p.m.
