MIAMI (May 10, 2023) – The FIU baseball team faced off against No. 11 University of Miami on Wednesday night, falling to the Canes, 10-0, in seven innings.
Redshirt freshman
Joel Pineiro got the start and was solid over his two innings of work. The righty gave up just one hit, struck out three and issued only one walk, as the two teams went into the third inning tied at 0-0.
The pitcher's duel continued as
Zac Lampton relieved Pineiro in the third and shut the Canes down for two more innings.
Lampton faced a high leverage situation in the bottom of the fourth with runners on the corners and two outs, after a wild pitch moved the runner to third. He would lock in and induce a pop out to the catcher
Craig Palidar, keeping the score at 0-0.
The breakthrough in the game came in the bottom of the sixth as the Hurricanes took a 5–0 lead.
A RBI double down the left field line by Zach Levenson broke the deadlock at Mark Light Field. Blake Cyr followed with a two-run single to center. The Canes would get another two-run single in the inning off the bat of CJ Kayfus.
FIU's
Alec Sanchez led off the top of the seventh with a five-pitch walk to extend his on-base streak to 30 games.
Canes added five runs in the seventh to go up 10-0.
Dominic Pitelli started the surge with a RBI single to right field. Lorenzo Carrier doubled to deep right field to score two and Carlos Perez added two more with a single that hugged the left field line.
The 10-0 advantage activated the run rule with No. 11 Miami coming away with the win.
