DENTON, Texas (May 14, 2023) -
Filippa Miller's historic performance in the pole vault highlighted the fourth and final day of the Conference USA Outdoor track and field championships for FIU.
Miller, a reigning second-team All-American, vaulted 4.35m on her first attempt at the mark, setting a personal best, meet recording, and securing the gold medal and ten points for FIU.
"You saw the joy from her immediately after she cleared the bar," said FIU head coach
Ryan Heberling. "A moment like that was deserved for Filippa, and she's peaking just at the right time."
Miller wasn't the only Panther to medal in the pole vault, as teammate
Nicole Janse Van Rensburg earned a bronze with her mark of 3.95m.
FIU collected medals throughout the course of the afternoon. Queshun Watson-Riggins, after earning a bronze yesterday in the long jump, picked up his second bronze of the weekend in the triple jump with a mark of 15.28m. Freshman
Cole Crkvenac impressed in his FIU outdoor championships debut, claiming bronze with a mark of 62.39m. Crkvenac's counterpart on the women's side, freshman
Hannah Jansen, also earned a bronze in her first trip to conference with a throw of 50.26m.
In the women's high jump, freshman
Celia Rifaterra continued her impressive campaign with a third-place, bronze medal jump of 1.70m. In the 1500m, junior
Lisa Adjouadi impressed with a tenth place finishing in 4:41.60.
"We saw high level performances across the board this weekend, and I'm very proud of our group," said Heberling. "Now we turn our attention to the East Prelims, where we'll certainly have opportunities to once again send athletes to NCAA's."
Heberling has guided FIU to an appearance at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in every season since he took over the program in 2015. The NCAA East Preliminaries will take place in Jacksonville, Florida from May 24-27.
