Baseball Falls to No. 11 Miami in Home Finale

Panthers and Canes complete 4-game set

MIAMI (May 16, 2023) – The FIU baseball team was at FIU Baseball Stadium for the last time in 2023 on Tuesday night hosting No. 11 University of Miami. The Panthers would lose the game, 17-3.
 
FIU's Alec Sanchez opened the scoring with a solo shot off the scoreboard to put the Panthers up 1-0. The home run extended his on-base streak to 34 games.
 
Miami would respond in the top of the third with two runs.
 
With a runner on third and no outs, the Canes' Jacoby Long laid down a bunt, beat out the play at first and tied the game at 1-1. A passed ball would allow a run to score, putting Miami in the lead.
 
The Miami advantage moved to 5-1 after the top of the fourth.
 
Blake Cyr led off the inning with a solo home run. CJ Kayfus would add two more with a single through the right side.
 
The Panthers cut into the Canes lead in the bottom half of the inning after Ryne Guida led the inning off with a solo home run over the left field wall.
 
Later in the inning, Craig Palidar hit FIU's third home run of the game to bring the score to 5-3.
 
The Hurricanes added a run in the top of the fifth after Ian Farrow drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.
 
Miami jumped out to an 11-3 lead in the top of the sixth.
 
A solo home run by Long made the score 7-3. Dominic Petelli stepped into the box with the bases load and two outs and cleared them with a grand slam to right.
 
Pitelli drove in his fourth run of the night with a single to right field in the eighth.
 
Miami would add four more runs in the ninth to win the game, 17-3.
 
UP NEXT
The Panthers close out the regular season with a trip to Houston to take on Rice with a spot in the C-USA Tournament on the line. Game one is on Thursday May 18 with first pitch set for 7:30 p.m. Fans can watch the game live on C-USA TV.
