Baseball Outlasted by Rice in Narrow Loss

Ryne Guida reaches 50 RBI for the season with 1st inning double

HOUSTON, Texas (May 19, 2023) – The FIU baseball team faced off against Rice in the second game of the series on Saturday falling to the Owls, 2-1.

The Panthers opened the scoring in the top of the first, jumping out to a 1-0 lead. Ryne Guida delivered a two-out RBI double for his 50th RBI of the season.

Starter Kevin Martin was fantastic against the Owls, throwing five shutout innings.

Martin and the defense retired eight of the first nine Rice batters they faced, issuing just one walk.

The Owls broke up the no hitter in the bottom of the fourth on a single by Jack Riedel, who eventually made his way to third with only one out on the board.

Riedel would get over aggressive on the base pads, being caught stealing at third after taking off for home early on a groundball to shortstop Roylan Quevedo.

Facing a bases loaded situation in the bottom of the fifth, Martin would induce a groundout to second to preserve FIU's, 1-0, advantage.

Bryan Pazos took over in the sixth with Owls on first and second. His very first pitch was lined back at him with the junior snagging the line drive and turning the double play at second to remove the runner from scoring position.

Rice finally got on the board in the bottom of the seventh, tying the game at 1-1.

The Owls' Drew Holderbach powered a ball down the right filed line to score a man from second with a RBI double.

Rice threatened to take the lead in the bottom of the eighth, loading the bases with one out on the board.

Quevedo corralled a ground ball and made the throw to home to keep the game tied. Ryan Cabarcas would end the high-leverage inning with a clutch strike out.

Two errors in the bottom of the ninth would allow Rice to clinch a walk-off win, 2-1.
