No. 21 Men’s Soccer Outlasts Oregon State in Season Opener, 2-1

Newcomer Mustre nets brace in FIU debut

CORVALLIS, Ore. (Aug. 24, 2023) – The No. 21 ranked FIU men's soccer team opened the 2023 season on the road Thursday night, defeating (RV) Oregon State, 2-1.

Eduardo Mustre started his FIU career with a bang, netting both goals for the Panthers.

Graduate Student goalkeeper Tyler Hogan was instrumental in the win with six saves, including turning away a penalty kick.

The Panthers fired the opening salvos, creating two great chances in the first five minutes. A Mustre header found the right post in the second minute and Paulo Alves just missed the left post with a well-aimed shot minutes later.
 
The Beavers would push back, taking the lead in the in the 14th minute with a goal by senior midfielder Vicente Castro.
 
FIU did not take their foot off the gas and found an equalizer in the 27th minute.
 
Sophomore Joao Domingues pounced on a loose ball in the Oregon State box, composed himself and delivered a cross to the far post that was headed home by Mustre to make the score 1-1.
 
The two sides continued to play high-intensity soccer and went into halftime deadlocked.
 
The intensity did not let up as both sides continued to pressure each other to open the second half.
 
The Panthers would find a breakthrough in the 57th minute to go up 2-1.
 
Yushi Nagao made a thundering run down the left flank before firing in a cross with pace. Mustre elevated in the center of the box and redirect the it into the bottom corner for his second headed goal of the night.
 
As the two teams continued to battle, the Beavers were awarded with a penalty shot in the 80th minute.
 
Oregon State's Logan Farrington stepped up to the spot but was thwarted as Hogan went full stretch to his right to push away the attempt and preserve FIU's lead.
 
The Panthers high press and solid possession in the final minutes would secure the, 2-1, victory.
 
UP NEXT
The Panthers home opener is set for Monday, August 28 against Virginia Commonwealth. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. and the match can be streamed on ESPN+.
