Swim & Dive Hosts SMU in Dual-Meet Saturday Morning

It marks FIU's second Power Four opponent of the season

MIAMI – The FIU swimming & diving program welcomes in the SMU Mustangs Saturday morning for a dual-meet at Biscayne Bay Campus.

FIU prepares for it's second power four meet of the season after taking on Miami to begin the season on Sept. 25.
 
Saturday will mark the first meeting between both schools in dual-meet fashion and first as members of different conference. SMU enters it's first season in the ACC (Atlantic Coast Conference) after spending 12 seasons in the American Athletic Conference.
 
Last year, FIU took first place in the AAC Championships with the Mustangs finishing second, totaling for 666 points.
 
LAST TIME OUT
FIU won the TYR Fall Classic for a third straight year, earning first place for a total of 550 points from Oct. 4 and Oct. 5.
 
The Panthers claimed 11 first-place finishes, alongside 17 top-three performances.
 
Senior Jessica Shpilko led the charge with five first-place finishes, including two individual events in the 50-free (23.36) and 100-free (52.83). She then followed it up with three medley relay wins for the 400-medley relay (3:47.08), 200-free relay (1:34.18) and 200-medley relay (1:42.74).
 
Sophomore Diana Santamaria added with solid swims for first-place in the 100-back (56.75) in addition to the respective relay wins as Shpilko.
 
Numerous freshman stepped up on the weekend including breaststroker Sally Olsson in the 100-breast (1:04.78) and 200-breast (2:19.58). Tawannah McLemore took first in the 200-IM (2:07.86) and 50-Free (23.78)
 
On the diving boards, the Panthers took first in both the 1-meter and 3-meter events led by graduate student Av Osero. She scored 267.75 on 1-meter for a Zone Cut and following up with a 268.05 on 3-meter in addition to FIU sweeping the 1-meter for the top five-spots.

FIU's roster embodies its international identity, featuring swimmers and divers from 15 different countries.
 
That includes Australia, Brazil, Canada, Faroe Islands, France, Finland, Kenya, Israel, Italy, Norway, Romania, Spain, Sweden, Uruguay, and USA

SCOUTING THE MUSTANGS
SMU enters the dual-meet off their first competition at the SMU Classic on Oct. 11 to Oct.12, hosting five programs, finishing in sixth place for 227 points.
 
Swimmer Jimena Leal led the team with 32 points, earning a personal-best in the 100-back (53.84). On the boards, diver Jaclynn Fowler earned a Zone Cut in the 1-meter event for 282.55 points.
 
The Mustangs feature 10 newcomers on their team with five freshman and five transfers as they join the ACC, beginning in the 24-25 season.
 
SMU finishes off a Miami weekend, first heading to Coral Gables on Friday, Oct. 25 taking on No. 24 Miami and Rutgers before dueling with FIU.

UP NEXT
The swimming program heads to Davie for a Tri-Meet against Nova Southeastern and Lynn on Friday, Nov. 8 and Saturday, Nov. 9. Diving hosts the South Florida Diving Invitational over the weekend.
