MIAMI — FIU's volleyball program secured a comeback five-set victory over Liberty to complete a two-match sweep of the Flames in Conference USA (CUSA) play on Wednesday afternoon.
The Panthers (5-20, 3-9 CUSA) erased a 2-0 match deficit with set victories of 25-10, 25-20 and 15-10, respectively. FIU also won its matchup on Tuesday with the Flames (11-13, 5-7 CUSA) 3-1 and completed its first two-match sweep in CUSA play this season.
FIU had 17 aces in the match, the most for the program since the Panthers recorded 16 on Sept. 3, 2010 vs. South Dakota State.
Cameryn Jones led the offense with 12 kills, hitting .364, and had five blocks at the net. Anna Feldkamp added 11 kills and six block assists. Jillian Huckabey was also in double-digits with 10 kills, adding eight digs defensively.
As a team, the Panthers had 10.0 total blocks in the match, their second-most this season. Savannah Cook racked up 35 assists and had six kills, helping the offense to a .441 hitting percentage over the final three frames. Mandi Morioka anchored the defense with 14 digs while Colby Lane had 11 digs off the bench.
FIU trailed early in both the first and second sets, allowing Liberty to cruise to comfortable 25-16, 25-17 wins.
The Panthers went on an 8-2 run to open the third after a Huckabey kill. FIU continued to tack on as Cook finished off a dominant frame 25-10.
In the fourth, back-to-back Huckabey kills put the Panthers up 13-5. Jones continued to maintain FIU's lead with a kill to go up 16-9. Liberty pulled within two at 21-19, but the Panthers used a 4-1 run to finish off the fourth.
In set five, Courtney O'Brien's service ace gave FIU a 5-2 lead and the Panthers built from there. O'Brien finished off the match with a kill to secure the 'reverse sweep'.
This is the second time this season that FIU has won from down 2-0, defeating Davidson in the same fashion on Sept. 8.
