JACKSONVILLE, Ala. — FIU's volleyball program swept Jacksonville State in Conference USA (CUSA) play on the road on Friday evening.
The Panthers (6-20, 4-9 CUSA) won their third-straight CUSA match and fourth in five outings with a 26-24, 26-24, 25-18 sweep of the Gamecocks (7-19, 0-13 CUSA). Courtney O'Brien led the offense with 14 kills, attacking at a .270 clip with two service aces and eight digs.
Jillian Huckabey and Anna Feldkamp totaled 21 combined kills in support. Setter Savannah Cook dished out 36 assists and finished with 10 digs for a double-double. Mandi Morioka racked up 23 digs in three sets, her most in a three-set match this season.
Offensively, the Panthers hit .240 with 46 kills compared to Jacksonville State's .117 and 32 kills. In the opening set, both sides battled for position with the Gamecocks leading 18-14 late in the frame. Down 24-21, FIU ran off five-straight points to pull off a comeback victory, 26-24.
O'Brien tied set two at 10-all before JSU used a 4-0 run to go in front, 14-10. With the score 16-13 in the Gamecocks' favor, the Panthers used another surge, this time a 6-0 run, to pull ahead, 19-16. Jax State tied the score at 24-all, but a kill and service ace from Feldkamp secured the result, 26-24.
Feldkamp capped a four-point run in the third with a kill to put FIU up 11-8. The Panthers maintained their lead down the stretch, ending the set on a Huckabey kill, 25-18, and completing their first CUSA sweep of the season.
