Miami, Fla. - FIU women's soccer won its first ever Conference USA (CUSA) Regular Season Championship on Thursday evening and clinched the No. 1-seed in the CUSA Women's Soccer Tournament after drawing with Jacksonville State, 2-2.
The Panthers end the regular season with their best record since 2012 with an 11-4-2 overall record, and their most conference wins since joining CUSA, ending at 6-1-2.
The Panthers saw themselves go down early after the Gamecocks scored a goal in the third minute, going up 1-0. The Panthers and Jacksonville State battled to the half, but FIU trailed 1-0.
Less than 10 minutes into the final 45, junior Ashly Martinez found sophomore Montelene Dymond on the Gamecocks' third of the field, allowing the Canadian native Dymond to push her way into the box and finish the equalizer, tying the match at 1-1 at the 53:11 mark. It was the fourth goal of the year for Dymond, and the first assist of her FIU career by Martinez.
The Panthers kept their foot on the gas, with senior Noemi Paquin finding the back of the net in the 69th minute to give FIU a 2-1 lead. The goal marked the 14th of the year for Conference USA's leading goal scorer, the most for an FIU player since 2001.
Jacksonville State found the back of the net one more time in the 70th minute, tying the game at two-all. Both teams created chances down the stretch, but neither could break through as the match ended 2-2.
FIU finds itself as the top seed in the CUSA Women's Soccer Conference Tournament, which will be played at home on Leyva Family Field at FIU Soccer Stadium. FIU will bypass the first round, earning a bye after their incredible 2024 campaign.
The tournament begins on November 6 at 4 p.m. with the final bracket to be released after CUSA regular season play finishes Friday night.
