SCOUTING JAX STATE
Jax State enters Saturday's meeting with FIU leading Conference USA with a perfect 5-0 league mark as well as a 6-3 overall record. The Gamecocks are 3-1 overall in home contests with the lone loss coming in the season opener against Coastal Carolina by a score of 55-27.
Â
Jax State has won each of its last six games after opening the season with losses in each of its first three contests, including a 31-21 win over defending CUSA champion Liberty on Oct. 30.
Â
The Gamecocks are averaging 39.2 points per game and allowing an average of 29.2 to their opponents. Jax State leans on its rushing attack offensively as they boast an average total of 260.9 rushing yards per game – which ranks fourth nationally and leads CUSA.
Â
Tre Stewart paces the Jax State rushing attack with 1,083 yards and 17 touchdowns. The 1,083 yards ranks as the eighth-best total nationally and tops in CUSA, while the 17 scores are sixth-best among all FBS players and also best in the league. Tyler Huff adds 826 yards on the ground – which sits 32nd nationally and third among conference leaders.
Â
Signal caller Huff also leads the passing offense for the Gamecocks with 1,701 yards and 10 touchdowns. His top receiver is Cam Vaughn who has tabbed 517 yards and three touchdowns.
Â
Defensively, the Gamecocks have forced 18 turnovers for a plus seven margin and have totaled 17 sacks over the first nine games of 2024.
Â
LAST MEETING VS. JAX STATE
FIU junior quarterback
Grayson James entered the game in the third quarter and led a strong comeback attempt by completing seven of his first nine passes, along with a rushing and passing score, before the Panthers came away with a 41-16 setback vs. Jacksonville State on Oct. 25, 2023.
Â
Jax State (7-2, 5-1 CUSA) opened the game with touchdowns on each of its opening three possessions to build a 21-0 advantage that proved to much for the Panthers to overcome, despite a furious push in the third quarter that saw it get within 11 points at 27-16 with 2:29 left in the third.
Â
The Panthers rallied to outscore the Gamecocks 13-3 in the third quarter and had a chance to get even closer before a call on a muffed punt by Jax State nullified a FIU fumble recovery inside the Jax State 40 and trailing by nine with just over 12 minutes left in regulation.
Â
James finished 12-for-20 overall through the air for 200 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for a score after replacing freshman
Keyone Jenkins as the signal caller in the third quarter.
Â
Junior wide receiver
Kris Mitchell logged 109 yards and a touchdown on five receptions.
Â
Quarterback Zion Webb paced the Jax State offense with 125 rushing yards and a pair of touchdowns on 20 carries. He also completed 9-of-19 passes for 105 yards and tossed one TD pass in the win.
Â

Â

Kris Mitchell (2023) and Tyrese Chambers (2022).
Â
Rivers leads Conference USA with eight touchdown receptions, including a career-high three in the win over New Mexico State. He tabbed scoring grabs of 52, 51 and 62 yards in the win over the Aggies.

Â
RIVERS NAMED TO BILETNIKOFF AWARD WATCH LIST
FIU junior wide receiver
Eric Rivers has been added to the 2024 Biletnikoff Award Preseason Watch List, it was announced by The Tallahassee Quarterback Club (TQC) Foundation, Inc., the Florida-based creator and sponsor of the prestigious Biletnikoff Award announced.
Â
The Chattanooga, Tenn., native leads Conference USA with eight touchdown receptions this season and ranks ninth among all players in FBS. His 876 receiving yards on the season also sit tops in CUSA and ranks ninth nationally. Rivers is averaging 97.3 receiving yards per game – which leads the league and is the ninth-best total in FBS.
Â
He has recorded a total of 12 catches that have went for over 30 yards this season – including six touchdown grabs that went for more than 30 yards.
Â
The Biletnikoff Award annually recognizes the college football season's outstanding FBS receiver. Any player, regardless of position (wide receiver, tight end, slot back, and running back) who catches a pass is eligible for the award. As such, the Biletnikoff Award recognizes college football's outstanding receiver, not merely college football's outstanding wide receiver.
Â
The semifinalists, finalists, and award recipient are selected by the highly distinguished Biletnikoff Award National Selection Committee, a group of 600 prominent college football journalists, commentators, announcers, Biletnikoff Award winners, and other former receivers. Foundation trustees do not vote and have never voted.
Â
Rivers was one of two players added to the list, which now totals 70 candidates for the prestigious honor.
Â
Recently, the Tallahassee Quarterback Club Foundation opened theÂ
2024 FanVote. Every fan may vote once daily on the Biletnikoff Award FanVote page. The aggregate fan tally will be counted as one official vote to determine semi-finalists, finalists (three receivers), and the winner.
