Women's Hoops Breaks Single Game Scoring Record in First Win of the Season

The Panthers broke their previous record of 128 points in a game, with Bineta Diatta hitting the deciding free-throw late in the fourth quarter

Miami, Fla - FIU Women's Hoops scores the most points in a single game in program history after a 132-25 evisceration of Florida National to open the Panthers' season 1-0.

FIU started fast and did not stop, breaking out to a 23 to nothing run through the first 7:10 of the game. Newcomer Lucia Fleta Robles led the way in the first quarter, scoring 10 points and going 3-3 in the frame. The senior went on to score the second most points in the game with 18 on 5-7 shooting and 3-4 from beyond the arc. The Panthers ended the first quarter leading 28-4.

The second quarter was much of the same, scoring 32 in the period with eight Panthers finding the bottom of the net in the frame. Junior Mya Kone led the way with seven points, ending the match with a game-high 21 points on 7-13 shooting, adding on 14 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. The forward led the team last season with nine double-doubles. FIU went into the half with a 60-13 lead.

The Panthers burst out of the half with a 32-0 run over the first 7:55 of the third quarter, scoring a total of 41 points and letting up just three points in the frame. Another newcomer in Judit Valero Rodriguez had the hot hand, scoring 14 points in the frame on 5-5 shooting and 4-4 from the three-point line. The sophomore ended the game with 16 points to go along with five assists and three rebounds, all of which were career highs for the Spanish native. FIU went into the final quarter with a 101-16 lead.

The fourth quarter saw true freshman Claudia Marina Gonzalez score the majority of the points, putting up seven 2-2 from the field, 1-1 from three, and 2-2 from the free throw line. The guard ended in double-digits, scoring 13 on the night and adding on one rebound and two steals. The record-breaking point was scored with just 53 second left in the game on a Bineta Diatta free-throw, putting the Panthers on top 129-25. FIU would score three more points before the final buzzer sounded, ending the game with 132 points on the night.

Seven Panthers ended the night in double-figures. Bineta Diatta in her first game with the squad put up 16 points, while Isnelle Natabou and Parris Atkins scored 12 and 15 points respectively, both of which also in their first games with FIU. 

Not only did the Panthers break their single-game scoring record but they also broke their single-game winning margin, previously at 88 points against Flagler in 1982, it is now 107 points after tonight's victory.

Senior Tanajah Hayes ended the match with two steals, officially placing her at sixth in program history in total steals with 198.
