Softball Rally Falls Just Short vs. Ohio State in Felsberg Invitational Finale, 7-5

Casey Goguts drives in a pair, now has six RBI over last two games

MIAMI – The FIU softball team raced out to an early 2-0 lead before falling by a 7-5 margin to Ohio State in the final game at the Felsberg Invitational on Sunday afternoon.
 
Graduate Casey Goguts smashed a two-RBI single in the first to put the Panthers in front 2-0.  She now has a total of six RBI over the last two games.
 
The Panthers made one final push in the seventh as they loaded the bases with one out – before coming away with three runs. 
 
Kally Meredith and Collier Peaden sparked the rally with a single and double to open the inning before Baily Grossenbacher launched a double to left center to bring home a pair.  FIU scored a run earlier in the frame on a sac fly by Natalie Burns.
 
Ohio State (4-1) battled back to take the lead with a single score in the first on a run-scoring single by Hannah Church before taking the lead with a pair of runs in the second via a solo homer by Sam Hackenbracht and an RBI double from Jasmyn Burns.
 
The Buckeyes added a pair of runs in the fourth to increase the margin to 5-2.  Ohio State scored a run during a pickoff of a runner on second and on a wild pitch.
 
Burns hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to round out the scoring for the Buckeyes.
 
The Panthers (2-3) finished the contest with 10 hits – two each from the bats of Goguts Collier Peaden and Ashton Lansdell.
 
FIU used a total of four pitchers in the contest.  Ohio State starter Allison Smith went six innings to earn the victory and run her mark to 3-0 on the season.  She reentered with two outs in the seventh to also notch a save.
 
UP NEXT
The Panthers return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 13 with a showdown against Louisville that is scheduled for a 5 p.m. ET first pitch from Felsberg Field in Miami.
 
The game will be televised live on ESPN+.
