MIAMI– The FIU Baseball program scored a total of 39 runs and mashed 8 home runs to secure a doubleheader over the Long Island Sharks on Saturday, taking game one for a result of 20-7 and game two, 19-4.
The bats shined offensively logging 34 combined hits, led by junior
Brylan West, going 9-for-9 with nine runs batted in, two HRs and two doubles.
In addition to West, three players logged multi-hit HRs games with
Jeff Liquori and
Alex Ulloa. 8 players notched multi-hits efforts (Liquori,
Armando Becerra, Ulloa, West,
Ryne Guida,
Roylan Quevedo,
Brendan Roney, and
Chase Engelhard)
Game One Recap
After falling in a 6-0 hole in the first, the FIU (3-0) offense did not look back scoring five runs in the 1
st on three home runs launched. Liquori launched his first home run as a Panther with a two-run blast out to left centerfield. Not for long,
Ryne Guida went yard on a solo shot, going back-to-back for FIU.
Later in the frame, after Becerra and Engelhard walked, Ulloa homered out to deep centerfield to begin his strong night at the plate, cutting the deficit to one.
West chipped in for a two-run homer launched to deep right field in the second to give FIU their first lead of the afternoon, 7-6.
The Panthers extended onto their offensive output, scoring five runs in the third as Ulloa marked his second home run of the day for a three-run shot. West and Liquori notched RBI doubles respectively.
On the mound, FIU settled in with
Orlando Hernandez (1-0), firing three scoreless frames, allowing a hit with three punchouts. Senior
Zac Lampton chipped in with a pair of no-run innings striking out two LIU batters.
FIU was not done mounting an eight-run inning in the fifth, as Guida, Becerra, Ulloa, Quevedo, and West all logged RBI base knocks. Engelhard ipped a double down the left field line scoring a pair and Frett brought home an run on a sacrifice fly.
Freshman pitcher
Tristan Dietrich shut the door in the seventh posting a scoreless frame with two strikeouts to secure a 20-7 run rule victory.
Game Two Recap
FIU did not take their foot off the gas, continuing to find a groove on offense in the second game. After LIU got on the board first on a RBI single, Engelhard cashed in his three-hit afternoon with RBI knock to left-field, scoring Becerra.
An
Austin Dearing RBI groundout gave FIU the lead before West sending a ball to deep centerfield field for a three-run blast.
The Panthers tacked on a five-spot in the third with an Becerra solo shot and
Brendan Roney two-run single that were key plays to give the Panthers a 10-4 lead after three innings.
Liquori added onto his stellar Saturday with an opposite field three-run homer. The Lake Mary, Fla. native notched five hits, seven RBIs, one double, and a pair of HRs on the afternoon.
The offense carried in the sixth with a two-run double from West down the left field line with Liquori and Quevedo providing RBI scores closing the book on a 15 run win.
Pitchers
Joel Pineiro,
Kevin Martin, and
Evan Alwine (1-0) all combined to just give up one earned run in seven innings, allowing three hits and struck out four batters.
