Softball Sweeps Pair of Games From Rutgers

Panthers rally for back-to-back wins over the Scarlet Knights

MIAMI – The FIU softball team rallied for a pair of come-from-behind wins on Saturday afternoon over Rutgers at the Panther Invitational in Miami.

The Panthers opened the day with a 4-3 victory over the Scarlet Knights that saw them battle back from an early 2-0 deficit, before following with a 3-2 win in eight innings in the finale.

Graduate transfer Casey Goguts drove home the eventual game-winning run in the opener with a sacrifice fly to deep center in the bottom of the sixth – after the Panthers loaded the bases with one out.

Rutgers (5-4) gained an early lead on a two-run home run by Morgan Smith before the Panthers responded with a run in the bottom of the second on a RBI groundout by Bailey Grossenbacher, which trimmed the margin to 2-1.  Kaleena Downing drove home a second run with single to center to knot the score at 2-2.

Grossenbacher followed by giving the Panthers their first lead of the contest at 3-2 in the bottom of the third with a single that scored Zamya McBurrows.

FIU starter Jordyn Ages (1-1) earned the win after pitching the final five innings of relief and limiting the Scarlet Knights to three hits and one run.

The second meeting required extra innings to decide a winner as the Panthers battled back from a early 2-0 deficit before walking off with the victory on a single to right by Collier Peaden – who tabbed a total of five hits over the two wins.

The Panthers (6-5) tied the game at 2-2 to force extra frames with a single tally in the sixth and seventh.  Ashton Lansdell provided an RBI single in the sixth and Makayla Navarro tied it up with a clutch sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh.

FIU freshman starter Jewlie Vanderkous (1-0) earned the win in the first start of her collegiate career while going the full eight innings and limiting the Scarlet Knights to two runs, only one of which was earned and four hits.
