Baseball Rallies Back Late, Falls Just Short in Extras vs FGCU

Liquori and West had three-hit performances

MIAMI - The FIU baseball team staged a comeback, rallying from a six-run deficit, falling just short in a 8-7 decision in ten innings to the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles Wednesday night from FIU Baseball Stadium.

The Panthers were down 6-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth after the Eagles scored four runs in the first on a grand slam, adding runs in the third and fourth.

FIU's rally began in the bottom half of the fourth as Jeff Liquori lifted a solo shot to left field, his fifth homer of the season. The Eagles put up a score in the sixth on a solo shot, yet the Panthers never backed down scoring three in the bottom half. Austin Dearing extended his on-base streak to five with a RBI double into centerfield that scored Liquori. Senior Andre Martinez lined a ball to right for a two-run single, cutting the deficit to three.

Senior Kevin Martin came on to pitch in the later innings, working a scoreless 1.2 innings with four strikeouts and just one hit allowed holding the game at bay. FIU was able to strike within distance as in the eighth Martinez recorded his third RBI of the night with a single to left. Ryne Guida came up to bat with runners on second and third, rolling a ball through the right side tying up the ballgame at seven.

Ryan Cabarcas worked a scoreless ninth before the Panthers headed to extras. The lefty gave up a solo shot in the 10th, just enough to lift the Eagles for the road win and was tagged with the loss.

Offensivley, the Panthers notched 12 hits including Brylan West and Jeff Liquori each securing three-hit performances. West logged two doubles from the leadoff spot.

Martinez had a two-hit game with three RBIs as the Davie, Fla native has brought home five RBIs in his past three games.

Jaydon Bishop and David Eckaus each worked scoreless performances out the pen for the Panthers.
