Women' Hoops Falls in the quarterfinals of the 2024 CUSA Basketball Championships

Tanajah Hayes and Mya Kone both scored in double-digits

Huntsville, Ala.  — The FIU Women's Basketball Team falls in the quarterfinals of the 2024 CUSA Basketball Championships to New Mexico State 63-58.

FIU jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but New Mexico State quickly went on a 10-2 run and ended the first quarter leading 14-8. The Panthers' offense picked up in the second, scoring 16 points with seven players contributing buckets. FIU cut the deficit to just two going into the break, with NMSU leading 26-24. 

FIU scored 16 again in the third quarter, with seven Panthers scoring in the frame as well. Mya Kone led with four points, ending the game with 12 points, scoring the majority of her points from the charity stripe, hitting all eight of her attempted free-throws. The sophomore added on six rebounds, two assists and one block to round off her afternoon. As a team, FIU shot 27-34 from the free-throw line, good for 79.4%. The Panthers went into the final frame with a 47-40 deficit.  

FIU fought their way back, starting off the quarter with a 5-0 thanks to a Tanajah Hayes field goal and a Sariana Rodriguez Camacho triple. After New Mexico State extended their lead back to seven, Tanajah Hayes continued to do well, scoring the Panthers' next six points and cutting the deficit to three. The Aggies extended their lead to six, and the Panthers answered with a 5-0 and tied the game with 32 seconds left. 

New Mexico State went on a 6-1 run over the final seconds of the game, falling to the Aggies, completing the Panthers' season.

Junior Tanajah Hayes ended the contest as the team's highest scorer with 18 points. The guard went 9-12 from the free-throw line, adding on six rebounds, three assists and three steals.
